We’ve not had that conversation yet with our teaching lab instructors. My plan is to reach out in the fall to find out if any feel they need to use it going
forward. If they can eliminate or substitute, they’ll have to implement that by the next academic year. If they want to continue using it, we’ll enroll them in monitoring, the result of which will determine if they’re actually allowed to continue using it
or not.
One piece of this that we haven’t figured out yet is how we’re going to track the identities of potentially exposed persons. Do you all plan to build centralized
tracking databases, or will you ask individual research groups to maintain those records?
Chris

Subject: Re: [DCHAS-L] Methylene chloride in teaching labs
Hey Alex,
We have removed it from all of our teaching labs, even the upper level ones to avoid this question and issue. I look forward to the discussion. We are also trying to figure out the best way to perform the monitoring of DCM which is required
before May 5, 2025.
Good afternoon,
Like many others, our institution is currently trying to assess the impacts of the new methylene chloride regulation from EPA, and a question has come up around use of this chemical
in teaching labs. Our chemistry department currently uses methylene chloride for some of their higher level courses. Do activities with methylene chloride conducted in teaching labs qualify as “commercial use as a laboratory chemical”?
How is your institution addressing this issue (if it is relevant for you)?
Any input is appreciated!
Regards,
~Alex
