Demystify:
Just thought you might like to know about the other ECELs that are either set or soon to be set:  And see how far from the old standards they are.

SUBSTANCE               ECEL-TWA   ECEL STEL   OSHA PEL-TWA
Asbestos                      0.005   f/cc                                0.1 f/cc
Methylene cloride        2          ppm       16 ppm          25 ppm
Trichloroethylene         0.0011 ppm                             10 ppm
Perchloroethylene       0.14     ppm                           100 ppm
Carbon Tetrachloride   0.03     ppm                            10 ppm

And one for N-methyl pyrrolidone is being set

Hey Alex,

We have removed it from all of our teaching labs, even the upper level ones to avoid this question and issue. I look forward to the discussion. We are also trying to figure out the best way to perform the monitoring of DCM which is required before May 5, 2025.

Warmest regards,
Jonathan

Good afternoon,

Like many others, our institution is currently trying to assess the impacts of the new methylene chloride regulation from EPA, and a question has come up around use of this chemical in teaching labs. Our chemistry department currently uses methylene chloride for some of their higher level courses. Do activities with methylene chloride conducted in teaching labs qualify as “commercial use as a laboratory chemical”?

How is your institution addressing this issue (if it is relevant for you)?

Any input is appreciated!

Regards,
~Alex
