Demystify:
Having been a volunteer firefighter in rural Wyoming, we did have SCBA with about 30-45 minutes of air supply.  When you put on all the turn-out gear, it came to a pretty heavy weight.

But when we did brush fires (not anywhere near what's happened in LA), you can't carry enough air with you and a supplied air respirator means you have to drag a hose and get out the same way you went in.  Not so good for structural fire response.  A PAPR with HEPA filter would be nice, but who has one?

Beside the particulate inhalation issues, there'll be carbon monoxide and likely cyanide  from both fires and smoldering (pyrolysis) in such cases.

Hi everyone!
Odd that I'm receiving this email. I'm the Technical Lead at NFPA for Industrial and Chemical Safety and I literally had a discussion on putting my blog out on NFPA 45 today.
If you all have any suggestions or info you would like to see before I publish it, don't hesitate to let me know!

Thanks!

Consider Jody Jahn, a professor at UC Boulder, who founded “Wildfire Learning” consulting and has about a decade of wildland firefighter experience.  Expert & excellent speaker.
