I charge my Macan EV inside my garage. While there have certainly been instances of cars (particularly Teslas) catching fire during charging, it is extremely rare. Most of these fires have involved higher charging rates, and the highest percentages have been
in underground garages. There are several regulatory standards that can guide charging procedures and reduce the incidence of fires, such as:
-
NFPA 855: Limits garage installations to 80 kWh and requires 3-foot separations.
-
IEC 61851: Defines four charging modes with increasing safety features.
-
NEC Article 625: Mandates dedicated circuits, GFCI protection, and proper ventilation.
As to theft during charging, I'm not seeing how one leads to the other as long as the vehicle is properly locked and secured.

How does one safely charge their electric transportation devices in a way that they won’t be stolen?

My daughter works in a high-rise office building in NYC. A coworker plugged in his scooter to charge it at work. She called me wondering if it was safe . I said, absolutely not, unplug it and make sure everyone is aware of the hazard.
I guess some of my safety parenting paid off!
