Busan University Lab Explosion Injures Student
Date of Incident: June 8, 2026
Location: Dongsam-dong, Yeongdo-gu, Busan, South Korea
Synopsis: A chemical explosion occurred at around 3:15 p.m. inside a university microbiology laboratory in Busan, South Korea, leaving a female student in her 20s with first-degree burns on her neck and arm. The incident took place while students were cleaning the laboratory and involved sodium hydride (NaH), a highly reactive compound known to generate volatile hydrogen gas and explode when it comes into contact with water or moisture in the air. The injured student was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, and local fire authorities and police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the blast to determine if proper safety protocols were followed.
