The policy in the Dow Chemical Central Research New England Lab (CRNEL) was very simple.
If there is something in the hood that you do not want to wear or eat when the sash is raised, have a portable shield in front of it.

Do fume hoods in undergraduate labs need safety shields in addition to the regular sashes? If yes, would this apply to all labs, or just, e.g., organic chemistry labs, etc.?
