By "safety shield" do you mean something like a blast shield used with energetic materials and high pressure reactions?
Additional equipment in a fume hood can disrupt airflow and cause spillage of hazardous vapors out of the hood. A shield could block airflow in and around a reaction and disrupt capture. A properly positioned sash is adequate protection and allows the hood to work properly.
I am curious what reactions undergraduates might be doing that would indicate a shield.

Do fume hoods in undergraduate labs need safety shields in addition to the regular sashes? If yes, would this apply to all labs, or just, e.g., organic chemistry labs, etc.?
