My experience has not been good with trying to paint over soapstone. The paint often flaked off and/or wore off fairly rapidly (months to a year). Chemical resistance was rarely as good as we were told. You might be safer getting a think SS sheet and installing
that instead.
Of course, every year new products come out that might work better. Good luck.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Epoxy painting soapstone chemical fume hood surface
Good afternoon DCHAS,
I’m wondering if any of you have any experience painting / resealing natural stone work surfaces in chemical fume hoods. A laboratory has three aging hoods that cannot be readily replaced. Considerations have included an epoxy-based sealant
/ paint OR installation of a ~16 gauge stainless steel sheet. Of course these cannot affect designed airflow, sash movement, etc.
We are awaiting confirmation that their scope of work will not increase beyond fine powders (metals, salts, silica), oils (mineral mostly), and cleaning solutions (soap, ethanol/IPA). I have also asked for the specific product(s), manufacturers
literature on intended use and chemical resistance, as well as their contractors experience using such materials on natural stone work surfaces.
Any thoughts, ideas, or experience from the group?
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
Best,
-P
