CHEMICAL PLANT FIRE CAUSES HAZMAT CONCERN - GREENVILLE NEWS STORY - WYFF
GREENVILLE, http://www.wyff4.com/news/24984251/detail.html

ROEBUCK, S.C. -- Dozens of firefighters responded to a fire at the
Hexion Specialty Chemicals in Roebuck.
...
Spartanburg County Emergency Management coordinator Doug Bryson said the
fire was put out in 30 minutes. Firefighters then ventilated the
building, which allowed them to take a closer look at the fire damage,
Bryson said.
...Bryson said a hazmat crew is at the plant to monitor the air. There
is no threat to community, he said. Bryson said if there had been at
threat, they would have evacuated residents using the reverse 911
system.
"They are picking up no traces of hazardous chemicals in the air at this
time," Bryson said.
According to its website, Hexion Specialty Chemicals is "the world's
leading producer of thermosetting resins."
Steve Statham is the site manager at the Roebuck facility. Statham said
there were small quantities of two chemicals were involved in the fire.
Statham said the chemicals are hydrogen peroxide and ammonium
persulfate. He said they are oxidizers, or reactive chemicals, used in
the company's manufacturing process.

WHDH-TV - SUICIDE PROMPTS CYANIDE SEARCH AT TRAIN STATION,
http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/local/12002204137364/commuter-rail-sear
ched-for-cyanide/

WESTWOOD , Mass. -- A woman=92s suicide led police to search for cyanide
at a local train station.

Police say former Northeastern University lab technician Emily Staupe
took her own life by ingesting crystallized cyanide.

According to investigators, Staupe, 30, took a train into Boston
Saturday and entered a Northeastern lab.

Authorities say she left her car at the Westwood commuter rail station.

The state police bomb squad and a Hazmat team searched the car.

No dangerous materials were located and there reportedly was no threat
to commuters.

The Boston Herald reports Staupe had recently been laid off from her job
and posted a farewell message to her friends on Facebook Saturday night.

Police say it is still not clear where Staupe obtained the cyanide.

Staupe was found inside her Milford home early Sunday morning.

Police say a plastic bag marked with the word "cyanide" was located near
her body.

No other hazardous materials were located inside the home.

Investigators are looking into whether the chemical had been taken from
Northeastern's lab.

According to the Boston Herald, one terrorist expert says regardless of
where she obtained the chemical, this case has prompted safety fears and
proves universities need to increase security to prevent potential
public safety risks.

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. =97 A hazardous materials team was called to Prince
George secondary school Friday after teachers and staff grew concerned
that an exploded canister in a food science lab could potentially cause
a botulism outbreak.

The explosion splattered the canister=92s contents on to students and
staff shortly before 2 p.m., Prince George RCMP said in a news release.

Two dozen students and four staff were quarantined while a hazardous
materials technician and a safety officer investigated the substance.

several years.

When it was determined a botulism outbreak had not occurred, students
were returned to their classes but dismissed early from school

MORE THAN 30 fire-fighters, ten fire-engines and a team from the police
rapid response unit MMAD were called out to tackle a massive chemical
fire in a Linopetra industrial estate warehouse early yesterday.
Two fire engines initially responded to the callout to the former Lord
Jeans building, which was being rented out as storage space to seven

However eight more units were eventually needed after flammable
materials inside, including cigarettes, billboards, clothing and

200,000-barrel naphtha tank on the tiny Caribbean island of Bonaire was
put out on Friday after Venezuelan planes doused it with chemical foam.

smoke still billowed from the damaged tank at a terminal that stores 12

BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY STUDENT IS HURT IN CHEMICAL EXPLOSION - WALTHAM,
MASSACHUSETTS - WICKED LOCAL WALTHAM,
http://www.wickedlocal.com/waltham/news/x907383724/Brandeis-University-stu
dent-is-hurt-in-chemical-explosion

WALTHAM =97 A Brandeis University graduate student sustained first- and
second-degree burns and lacerations to his face in a chemical explosion
at the school=92s science building Thursday morning, said Fire Chief
Richard Cardillo.

The student, a male who has not yet been identified, was rushed to Mass.
General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following the
explosion at 10:49 a.m., Cardillo said.

He was released at 5 p.m., said Brandeis spokesman Andrew Gully.

The student is a candidate for a Ph.D. in chemistry, said Gully, who
declined to name him due to privacy issues.

=93He was doing work for his graduate degree, and something obviously
went wrong, because the chemicals he was using don=92t normally cause an
explosion, but this time they did,=92=92 Cardillo said.

Deputy Fire Chief Roger Hebert said the two chemicals were
tetrahydrofuran and calcium hydride.
"If mixed, you can get a gas that could be bad, but they use such a
small quantity, it's not an issue,'' said Hebert.

Gully said, =93Those two chemicals should not have created that kind of
reaction.=94
