Emergency supplies of fresh linen had to be trucked in from Sydney during September's Mitchell fire crisis, to keep the Canberra Hospital's operating theatres running.
Plans were even made to send firefighters with breathing apparatus into the ACT Government's linen service within the evacuation zone to retrieve sterile surgical linen packs.

The chemical fire broke out late at night on September 15 at the Energy Services Invironmental hazardous waste treatment plant, and resulted in much of the industrial suburb being shut down for several days.

Minister for Territory and Municipal Service Simon Corbell told a Legislative Assembly Committee that emergency measures had to be put in place to ensure the hospital's surgical teams continued to get their sterile uniforms and other linen.

Capital Linen, regarded as critical infrastructure because of its importance to medical health services, employs about 100 people at its Mitchell site and launders about 100 tonnes of linen each week for the ACT Government and private clients.

FORTY firefighters were called to deal with a chemical leak at a Luton sandwich factory on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at Hain Celestial‚s premises (formerly Daily Bread Ltd) in Britannia Estates, Leagrave Road, when a quantity of sodium hypochlorite leaked from a container, at around 8.30 a.m.

Five fire appliances and a number of specialist support vehicles from Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Services (BLFRS) were sent to the scene, together with the ambulance service and police.

Workers in the sandwich making plant and adjacent factory units on Britannia Estate were evacuated and Leagrave Road was closed as emergency crews arrived to deal with the spillage. No local residents were evacuated.

Representatives from the Environment Agency and Thames Water also attended the scene as there were concerns that the chemical, a bleach, which had entered the on site drainage system, might enter the water courses, if not contained.

Firefighters from Tisbury, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown battled a fire that broke out in a large metal building at the Maciel Marine boatyard off Lagoon Pond Road in Vineyard Haven about 1 pm, Saturday.

A stiff northeast wind, a congested work area, and the abundance of hazardous materials stored inside the building contributed to the difficulty of the firefighting job.

A team from the state fire marshal's office arrived on the Island late Saturday to assist in the fire investigation. Tisbury Fire Chief John Schilling said the initial investigation identified the location in the building where the fire started. "What we don't have is a source of ignition," Chief Schilling said. "No one thinks there is anything suspicious. At this point in time, the investigation is ongoing."

No one was injured. Damage was confined to the interior of the building used as a workplace and for boat storage.

Stored in the building was a volatile mix of containers that included paint, propane, gasoline, oil, lubricants and solvents. Small explosions could be heard from inside as black, acrid smoke billowed from around doors, windows and roof vents.

DOVER (AP) ˜ A leak of vapor at a chemical plant in eastern Ohio has sent three workers to the hospital and led authorities to restrict traffic in the area.

Fire Chief Russ Volkert in Dover tells The Times-Reporter the public was never in danger from Thursday evening's incident at Dover Chemical Corp. He says the leak was contained quickly and an evacuation was never ordered.

Firefighters were called around 6:30 p.m. by a motorist in the area who reported an odor burning his eyes and making him cough.

Dover Chemical Executive Vice President Tom Freeman says the workers who received medical treatment are OK. He said in a statement that a "chlorinated paraffin solution" was released and says the company is trying to determine why, so it won't happen again.

ROSSVILLE, WALKER COUNTY (WRCB)-- Channel 3 is learning more about a home explosion that rocked a Rossville neighborhood Wednesday night.

Officials with the State Fire Marshal's office continued their investigation on Mission Ridge Road Friday morning. Sniffer dogs walked the property, but nothing meth-related was detected.

While investigators haven't determined an official cause, they believe the explosion could stem from a 60-year-old septic tank.

A methane detector found levels of the chemical were three times higher than usual. Investigators believe a seal on an iron pipe came loose, triggering the explosion.
