I had no issue.  However, when I used my VPN software to come to the site from a different IP address, I too, got the popup.

However, if you look in the upper right corner of the popup there is an almost-camoflauged little X to make that login request go away.  Just click that (or maybe just press escape) and you will see the article with no problem and no logging in.

Likewise, some browsers (like Safari for Mac) have little icon to the left of the URL that looks like a paragraph. That will put you in Reader View which suppresses ads and also bypasses many (but not all) popups that block access to content. Also makes for better printing.

This requires a log-in to view.  I am not particularly enamored of referral links that require that, and I am certainly not going to use Facebook or Google account information to log in to any other site.

While stumbling around the web with regard to thinking about the risk matrix, I came upon an article that questioned its value:
 
 
The essence of the argument, I think, is that estimates of probability are very unreliable.   I'd appreciate the wisdom of the list regarding this essay and its conclusion.
