Demystify:
Back in the early 1950's at the University of Oklahoma, Raman spectroscopy was under study in the physics department. I saw the apparatus only once but as I remember, the exciting radiation was created by a mercury arc lamp. In the interior of the spectroscope chamber an open dish of mercury was placed to absorb unwanted lines. My mind is fuzzy as to the precise details of the experiment.

Forgive me, please. But your name and the effects of chronic mercury exposure do have an obvious link. Monona

Remember the dropping mercury electrode polarograph? Mercury all over the lab.

I recall as an astronomy undergraduate in the late 60's we used a mercury filled basin as an artificial horizon for sextant sightings.
