A study commissioned by the EU Observatory for Nanomaterials has found a lack of data on female fertility. Studies on reproductive performance were also scarce. As such, the study calls for more coordinated tests and follow up of outcomes when concerns are identified.

Helsinki, 6 April 2020 ‰?? This lack of data results in uncertainties on the potential toxic effects of nanomaterials over multiple generations.

The available information identified a concern for developmental toxicity for the materials that were tested and indicates that nanomaterials may be able to cross the placental barrier and reach developing foetuses, as well as affect critical organ systems.

The report also identifies a lack of studies comparing bulk and nanoforms of the same substance, resulting in uncertainties in possible differences in toxicity.

GLOBAL - A new report on fires in the fashion industry's global supply chains paints a bleak picture of factory safety by revealing a total of 66 reported blazes during the month of March - an average of more than two a day.

The report, entitled Fires in the Fashion Industry Supply Chain, was produced by Stephen Frost of the CUHK Business School in Hong Kong, in association with the GoBlu sustainability accelerator for apparel and textile companies.

The fires resulted in four deaths and 50 injuries, ranging from minor to serious, and were reported in 18 countries with India - which accounted for 30 per cent of the total - the worst affected.

The Environment Agency has said there's no evidence to suggest a large amount of chemicals seeped into a canal after a huge blaze at an industrial estate.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the raging blaze at the Adamson Industrial Estate on Croft Road in Hyde on Saturday night.

A number of business units were destroyed as the flames reached three separate brick buildings at the site.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said a large amount of chemicals were stored within the estate, which is next to a stretch of the Peak Forest Canal.

The Environment Agency was called to assist and advised the fire service over pollution control measures.

One chemical believed to have been used on site was sulphuric acid.

But the Environment Agency said investigations found nothing to suggest the canal has been badly polluted.

WHY THE BEST MATERIAL FOR A HOMEMADE CORONAVIRUS FACE MASK IS HARD TO IDENTIFY

The internet is exploding with mask-sewing patterns and advice on which materials are best to use, but many unanswered questions remain about how exactly SARS-CoV-2 spreads and what benefit widespread wearing of nonmedical masks may offer individuals and the public. Because of the inherent variability in household materials, mask design, and mask-wearing behavior, experts caution that the practice is no replacement for social distancing.

‰??It is critical to emphasize that maintaining 6-feet social distancing remains important to slowing the spread of the virus,‰?? according to the CDC‰??s web page on the use of cloth face coverings.

Understanding what a mask needs to do to protect the wearer and those around them begins with understanding how SARS-CoV-2 spreads. Experts think people pass the virus to others primarily through respiratory droplets. These infectious globs of saliva and mucus, expelled by talking and coughing, are relatively large and travel limited distances‰??they tend to settle on the ground and other surfaces within 1‰??2 m, although at least one study has suggested sneezing and coughing can propel them farther (Indoor Air 2007, DOI: 10.1111/j.1600-0668.2007.00469.x). Scientists have not yet reached a consensus on whether SARS-CoV-2 virus can also spread through smaller aerosols, which have the potential to spread farther and linger in the air. In one experiment, researchers found that the virus can remain infectious in aerosols for 3 h in controlled lab conditions (N. Engl. J. Med. 2020, DOI: 10.1056/NEJMc2004973). But this study has limitations. As the World Health Organization noted,!
the researchers used specialized equipment to generate the aerosols, which ‰??does not reflect normal human cough conditions.‰??

Homemade and other nonmedical cloth masks would function like surgical masks, which are designed to minimize the spread of the wearer‰??s germs to surrounding people and surfaces by blocking respiratory emissions from the wearer. Respiratory emissions include saliva and mucus droplets, as well as aerosols. These masks, often made of paper or other nonwoven materials, fit loosely around the face and allow air to leak in around the edges when the user inhales. As a result, they‰??re not considered reliable protection against inhalation of the virus.

Officials have since linked the blaze to a gender reveal party gone wrong. According to Brevard County Fire Rescue Chief Mark Schollmeyer, their area is under a ‰??burn ban,‰?? and he‰??s urging everyone to follow the rules after a fire broke out in the area thanks to a gender reveal that didn‰??t go as planned.

Firefighters were called to a home after a fire broke out that officials believe was ignited by fireworks or other explosives.

‰??We were informed that it was caused by gender reveal using Tannerite and a weapon,‰?? Schollmeyer told WESH News. ‰??Something as seemingly innocent as a gender reveal can turn into a large-scale disaster where homes are threatened,‰?? he explained.

Sasol, the country‰??s major chemical- and energy-producing company, is among those alleged to have forced workers to report for duty without observing government lockdown regulations aimed at curbing Covid-19 infections.

However, the company has denied any wrongdoing.

This has emerged after City Press received a tip-off last week that the organisation was forcing workers to report for duty to its Coal Tar Filtration East (CTFE) project, which was allegedly not critical, as it had been underway for years.

However, Sasol spokesperson Alex Anderson said last week that the project was important to enable the company to minimise its environmental impact, while further reducing health risks to personnel on-site.

‰??It‰??s near completion and is already integrated into the production process of synthetic fuels and chemicals. These are some of the factors that classify this project as essential,‰?? Anderson explained.

BENGALURU: Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths arrested a 53-year-old man for allegedly storing and selling explosive petroleum chemicals to manufacturers of substandard sanitisers.
Renuka Prasad, a resident of BTM Layout who runs a chemical shop in Sudhamanagar, near Wilson Garden, was arrested on Saturday after a CCB police team raided his establishment and seized over 1,300 litres of petroleum chemicals.
Police said Prasad confessed to the crime, saying he had stored the highly flammable chemicals without taking permission and sold them to persons who were illegally manufacturing substandard sanitisers to make quick money during the Covid-19 lockdown.

CLEANING FOR CORONAVIRUS: MIXING CERTAIN CLEANING PRODUCTS CAN BE DANGEROUS

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. ‰?? Recently, Cal Fire in Riverside County released a reminder on Twitter, telling people to not mix certain cleaning products.

Combining household products such as bleach with other cleaning products like vinegar, ammonia, or rubbing alcohol can put your health at risk.

According to Cal Fire, mixing bleach with vinegar creates chlorine gas and can cause breathing problems and watery eyes.

Along with improper use, ServPro of North Shasta, Trinity & Greater Tehama Counties says people need to recognize the difference between cleaning and disinfecting.

"Clean the surface before you disinfect it. Before you disinfect it, you might want to read the label on the product to see how long it recommends the product dwell or stand before you wipe it clean or wipe it off, " said ServPro Marketing Manager Laura Burgdorf.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM COMMON ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS

When you think about toxic chemicals, you probably imagine green sludge pooling outside of factories and nuclear waste‰??harmful things you'd rarely find yourself around. Despite this out-of-sight-out-of-mind mindset, you're likely encountering chemicals that can affect your hormones and health every single day, says Leonardo Trasande, M.D., a leading environmental scientist and the director of the NYU Center for the Investigation of Environmental Hazards. His latest book, Sicker, Fatter, Poorer, is all about the dangers of endocrine disruptors, those hormone-disrupting chemicals.

Here, Dr. Trasande shares the research-based facts you need to know‰??plus how to protect yourself.

What makes these substances so harmful?
"Hormones are natural signaling molecules, and synthetic hormone-disrupting chemicals scramble those signals and contribute to disease and disability. We know of about 1,000 synthetic chemicals that do that, but the evidence is strongest for four categories of them: flame retardants used in electronics and furniture; pesticides in agriculture; phthalates in personal-care products, cosmetics, and food packaging; and bisphenols, like BPA, that are used in aluminum cans and thermal-paper receipts.

These chemicals can have permanent consequences. Male and female infertility, endometriosis, fibroids, breast cancer, obesity, diabetes, cognitive deficits, and autism have been directly or indirectly linked to them."

The federal agency that polices workplace safety has stopped short of enacting an emergency rule to guard against on-the-job transmission of the novel coronavirus, but employers still must adhere to numerous existing regulations as they try to manage the risk and uncertainty created by the global pandemic.

Take, for example, illness and injury reporting requirements. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires hundreds of thousands of employers with 10 or more workers to maintain a log of every workplace injury or illness that requires medical treatment beyond first aid or that keeps a worker away from work for at least one day.

Those requirements do not include cases of the common cold or influenza. But in early March, the agency released guidance requiring businesses to record confirmed cases of Covid-19 that are work-related.
