Equipment and raw material worth Rs 4 crores approximately was burnt to ashes when two chemical factories running on the same premises caught fire in Agra on Monday.

It took 20 fire tenders and about 160 firemen to douse the fire that took place in the factories located on the NH 2.

The fire was so intense that families living in nearby villages left their houses and came out on the highway.

Both factories are owned by Deepak and Ravi Manchanda, two businessmen brothers who live in the Shahganj area of the city. About 150 workers were present in the factories at that time, but there has been no report of any lives being lost.

Trace amounts of the potentially dangerous chemical PFAS have been detected in soil and groundwater samples at the Elanora Sewage Treatment Plant site..

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is understood to have detected the presence of the chemical while undertaking routine soil sampling for the widening works of the M1 from Varsity Lakes to Tugun.

City of Gold Coast has confirmed it is now working closely with The Queensland Department of Environment and Science and Queensland Health to further investigate the issue.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - A fresh fire on a large oil tanker drifting off Sri Lanka's coast was extinguished on Wednesday after burning for two days, the navy said, as experts prepared to salvage the vessel.

A new blaze broke out Monday on the MT New Diamond, which was carrying nearly 2 million barrels of crude oil, and reached the magnitude of last week's fire, only a day after a three-day blaze was extinguished. The first fire began on Thursday.

Officials have warned of massive environmental damage to Sri Lanka's coast if the ship leaks or explodes.

"The fire has now been extinguished and the ship is being towed by a tugboat to out to sea," said navy spokesperson Indika de Silva.

"There are no flames or smoke to be noticed as of now," he said, adding that the navy's specially trained firefighting and disaster management team will join with firefighting experts from India's coast guard and specialists sent by the ship's owner on Wednesday to assess the situation.

The EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention is significantly reorganizing at the end of the month to respond to the department's changing work, agency leaders said Tuesday.

The changes reshuffle the structure of OCSPP's three main divisions: the Office of Pesticide Programs, the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics, and the Office of Science Coordination and Policy, according to Environmental Protection Agency officials, who spoke on a call that was shared by an employee who wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

No jobs will be shed and no pay grades will be changed, according to a Tuesday internal email obtained by Bloomberg Law from Alexandra Dapolito Dunn, assistant administrator of the office.

Some employees' responsibilities will change, although the EPA will work with staffers to ensure a good fit, Yvette Collazo, director of the pollution prevention program, said on the call.

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) - A student was injured in a fire brought on by a laboratory accident at Northwestern University on Monday.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the graduate student was working at the Richard and Barbara Silverman Hall for Molecular Therapeutics and Diagnostics, at 2710 Campus Dr. on the Evanston campus, when he was injured.

The university did not specify how the university was injured or what chemicals or substances may have been involved. But the university did say there was a fire, and he suffered burns to his hands, arms, torso, and neck, and was taken to NorthShore Evanston Hospital.

"Our thoughts are with the student and his family. We are in touch with the family to offer our support and our sincere hope that he makes a quick and full recovery," the university said in a statement. "We also would like to thank his fellow graduate students for acting quickly to extinguish the fire and provide emergency aid."

New Delhi: A Dornier aircraft is being launched from Chennai to Trincomalee on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka with 700 kilograms of dry chemical powder (DCP) for fire fighting operation onboard oil tanker MT New Diamond.
"Indian Coast Guard invoking SACEP and MoU provisions, ICG ship Abheek entering Trincomalee harbour this morning to hand over 1500 kg of DCP to SL authorities for Fire Fighting MT New Diamond. Dornier aircraft being launched Chennai to Trincomalee with 700 kg DCP," the Indian Coast Guard tweeted.

The Indian Navy on Monday said re-ignition of the fire was observed on the starboard side of the oil tanker MT New Diamond.

"Re-ignition of fire observed on Starboard (Right) side of MT New Diamond. Fire-fighting and boundary cooling efforts intensified to bring fire under control. Salvage Team has arrived at scene. Additional assets, salvage personnel & FF equipment also enroute," Indian Navy said in a tweet.

A YEAR after a waste depot fire terrified nearby residents they still fear for their safety, writes Laurie Churchman

GRAHAM Ennis was asleep on the night of the Hollingdean waste depot fire. He woke with his eyes burning and his face covered in ash.

The 75-year-old had taken sleeping pills, and breathed in smoke for more than an hour before he realised what was happening.

A blaze had broken out inside the Hollingdean Lane waste transfer station in Brighton.

Fire crews battled to bring it under control for 12 hours on August 25 last year, as fumes from burning rubbish billowed into the neighbouring Dudeney Lodge tower block.

Graham remembers stumbling over to his window and seeing flames around the depot.

"All hell was breaking loose," he said. "Our block got the full blast."

He inhaled so much smoke he had to go to hospital, and was diagnosed with a chemical lung condition.
