It could be that the Professor was going to do a demonstration and filled a storage Dewar full of the liquid nitrogen. There are many demonstrations that use liquid nitrogen and lots of university do outreach.

Very curious about the Fresno State incident. A liquid coming from a professor's office that was identified just as "nitrogen." I'd expect a few other comments if someone was describing liquid nitrogen, and wonder why a professor would have any liquid nitrogen in their office, let alone enough that it could start leaking out from under the door.

Wheeling fire responders were called on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. to a factory on the 100 block of Messner Drive in Wheeling for a potentially volatile situation involving chemicals. There were no injuries.

The Aug.10 hazardous material leak incident took place at a factory that makes dental applications such as bridges and retainers. The warehouse is located in an industrial park just west of Chicago Executive Airport near S. Wolf Road.

Crews responded when two 55 gallon drums were apparently having some sort of chain reaction and were leaking, said Wheeling Fire Chief Mike McGreal.

On arrival, responders found the building to be evacuated and located the two drums leaking a chemical, methyl methacrylate, which is a resin used in dentistry to make and repair dentures.

One of the drums was misshapen and responders were worried the barrels could explode.

The chemicals in the barrels were reacting to the humidity and became a fire hazard, McGreal said.

The Saskatoon fire department responded to reports that an ‰??unknown hazardous material‰?? could be present at a Nutana home on Wednesday.

As fire dispatchers connected with ambulance dispatchers, the fire battalion chief determined that something ‰??indicated a chemical‰?? and decided to send in the hazmat unit, decontamination unit and emergency management command vehicle, said assistant fire chief Yvonne Raymer. Raymer added that she did not know what information prompted the battalion chief to call for the specialized units.

Firefighters in full protective gear evacuated the home. Technicians later determined that the chemical was helium and that it was present at safe levels; no ventilation was required.

Raymer said she had no information regarding the initial medical call. She also had no further information on the outcome of the medical call or how many people were at the home. Carbon monoxide readings were zero.

HYDERABAD: Three fires in less than two years on the arterial Punjagutta flyover have led to questions on its safety.
While officials maintained that there has been no structural damage and it was safe, civil engineers taken by TOI to check the 2.1 km flyover said that any delay in thorough inspection could have catastrophic consequences.
The flyover‰??s scaffolding had collapsed while under construction in September 2007. Luckily, a major tragedy was averted and only one person had died then and a few others injured as there were few vehicles under it.
On Tuesday, when TOI visited the flyover with civil engineers, they found fire damage at three different places. A visual assessment by two different engineers showed expulsion of concrete from the surface layer at places exposed to heat, damage to the rubber bearing pads between the deck slab and pier, and smoke damage.

Asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) is a commonly used transformation in the pharmaceutical industry for the reduction of ketones to establish key stereocenters. Yet, the potential for hydrogen gas generation during reaction, workup, and waste handling processes could be overlooked, resulting in serious safety issues such as waste container overpressurization or fire. In this study, multiple module calorimeter (MMC) testing along with micro-GC tests of small scale (1‰??2 mL) representative lab samples were performed to detect and predict the potential safety hazards associated with the scale-up of an ATH process. Due to the safety concern discovered in the early safety screening tests, methanesulfonic acid (MSA) quench was implemented at the end of the ATH reaction to suppress hydrogen generation, avoiding possible overpressurizing the waste drum and the need to use special hydrogen-rated equipment at pilot- and production-scale. A safety assessment was performed to ensu!
re that the subsequent vacuum distillation poses no risk of hydrogen combustion caused by using a standard pump/system. The process improvements and rigorous safety assessments enable the ATH reaction to be scaled-up using standard pilot plant equipment without the need for special handling and monitoring requirements for hydrogen gas. This study provides useful guidance and recommendations for safer scaling-up of similar organic synthetic reactions which may also generate flammable gas.

It is the second incident to affect the company in less than a fortnight. At the beginning of August it said it was being forced to cull around a million salmon and postpone its first transfer until next year after discovering just one case of Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) at its farms in Newfoundland.

It said the move was a precautionary measure and no further cases of ISA had been discovered.

The chlorine spill in Altafjord this week was a large one, totalling around 15,000 litres and significant enough for the emergency services to brought in. Chlorine is a chemical normally used to disinfect the water in slaughterhouses. The equivalent loss in fish numbers could be more than 90,000 at an average weight of around four kilos.

The Norwegian news outlet VG reports that the company is in the process of assessing the situation but it is thought the chemical escaped from a large storage tank into a waiting cage plant.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A city worker was taken to the hospital after inhaling a hazardous chemical left during a curbside trash pickup on Tuesday.

Fresno fire officials say waste collectors were picking up trash on Dearing and Minarets Avenues in northeast Fresno.

That's when workers saw a cloud of vapor after the pile of trash was dumped into the truck.

The Fresno Fire Department's hazmat teams were called to help decontaminate the area.

The neighborhood was closed off while crews washed down the acid, neutralizing it. The area has since been reopened.

Investigators found that someone had left a bottle of pool acid in the trash pile.

The city worker was taken to a hospital for observation. Officials say they are expected to recover.

large warehouse fire in Fort Atkinson Tuesday displaced about 50 residents and injured some of the 150 firefighters called to the scene.

An explosion at a chemical plant near the northern Illinois community of Rockton sparked a massive fire that sent flames and huge plumes of thick black smoke high into the air Monday morning.
The fire was reported around noon in the 700 block of Oak Street on the city‰??s north side, police said. There was no one in the building at the time.

Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said at a press conference Tuesday evening that some firefighters suffered injuries due to the heat and were treated at the scene or taken to a local hospital.

Rausch said crews nearly ‰??drained the city water system‰?? while combating the blaze, leading to the department‰??s decision to let the rest of the building and its contents burn. The warehouse contained tires for military vehicles, unspecified chemicals and cans from a local canning company.

Both the state Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were on site monitoring the quality of the water and air in the area.

FDA RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT PFAS IN FOOD

The US Food and Drug Administration is reminding manufacturers that only certain processes are allowed for fluorinating polyethylene containers used to store food. The warning comes following reports earlier this year of toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) migrating into pesticides stored in fluorinated high-density polyethylene containers.
In an Aug. 5 letter to industry, the FDA clarifies that fluorinated polyethylene containers used for food can only be made using fluorine gas in the presence of nitrogen to modify the surface of a molded container. Fluorination in the presence of water, oxygen, or inert gases other than nitrogen is not allowed because such processes can lead to the formation of toxic PFAS that can migrate into food, the agency says. Fluorination of polyethylene food containers during the molding process is also prohibited.
The FDA claims that it sent the letter out of an abundance of caution, not because it is aware of any unauthorized fluorinated polyethylene containers being used to store food. ‰??It is important to note that there is no evidence of unlawful manufacturing processes being used for food containers,‰?? Susan Mayne, director of the FDA‰??s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, says in a statement. ‰??We are encouraging manufacturers and distributors to consult with us regarding the regulatory status of any manufacturing processes used to produce fluorinated polyethylene containers for use in contact with food,‰?? she says.
