MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Fire Department Hazardous Incident Team responded quickly to contain a spill of more than 100 gallons of used cooking oil Monday after a dumpster tipped over outside a restaurant on Madison's west side.

According to an incident report from the Madison Fire Department, the hazmat team responded to Madtown Chicken 'n' Fish on Raymond Road at 3:47 p.m. Monday. The dumpster, containing 100-150 gallons of used cooking oil, had tipped over, and was spreading toward the Kwik Trip that shares a parking lot with the restaurant.

Cleanup teams used several absorbent powders to clean up the spill, with help from Kwik Trip staff. Officials were able to keep the spill contained in the parking lot.

Authorities don't know how the dumpster tipped over.

LOS ANGELES, CA ‰?? Los Angeles firefighters and a hazardous materials team are battling a fire at a metal scrap yard in Boyle Heights. The blaze involves titanium shavings, triggering the need for a hazmat response.

Crews are monitoring water runoff from the firefight for hazardous materials. The fire, which has sent smoke billowing into the air over East Los Angeles, broke out shortly before 3:20 p.m. Monday at the scrapyard at 1820 South Soto Street.

The outside titanium piles are not causing any structural threats and are being allowed to burn, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

A total of 24 people have been taken to hospital after a 'hazmat incident' at a hotel in Hampshire.

Guests were evacuated from the Solent Hotel & Spa on Rookery Avenue in Whiteley, Fareham after a hazardous material in the spa area caused some people to suffer from itchy eyes.

A Hazardous Area Response Team was at the scene and ventilation was in progress by breathing apparatus teams.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service (HIWRS) were alerted to the incident at 8.44pm on Monday.

A spokesperson said: "Firefighters from Hightown, Fareham, Cosham, Portchester, St Mary‰??s and Romsey worked alongside paramedics and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) from South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) last night, following a hazardous materials incident at a hotel in Whiteley.

The emergency department at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley reopened after a 45-minute closure while the Greeley Fire Department responded to a chemical incident Monday afternoon.

Fire crews responded to a potential hazmat incident report from the NCMC after multiple people were exposed to a hazardous material at another location, according to information released by Greeley fire.

The department reported the ER temporarily closed around 2:30 p.m. for 45-minutes while they investigated the scene. No other areas in the hospital were affected by this incident.

The responding crews determined there was no threat to patients, visitors or staff. The NCMC emergency department then returned to normal operations.

WAKEFIELD (CBS) ‰?? Three people were taken to the hospital when a cleaning solution triggered a hazmat response at a warehouse in Wakefield on Monday.

Several dozen employees were evacuated from the Produce Connection facility on Audubon Road.

One woman was wheeled away on a stretcher.

Employees complained about an odor coming from the machine used to clean organic fruits and vegetables. Because more than one person felt sick, firefighters evacuated the building as a precaution.

The hazmat team investigated for about three hours, but found no evidence of anything hazardous inside of the Produce Connection facility.

An unused fuel storage tank being dismantled by welders caught fire Monday afternoon in South Philadelphia at the former Philadelphia Energy Solutions site, now owned by Hilco Redevelopment Partners and was declared under control several hours later.

The fire broke out about 1:15 p.m. at the tank on the 1,300-acre property off Penrose Avenue and South 26th Street. The Philadelphia Fire Department did not have to evacuate any residents, and no one was injured.

Up to 100 firefighters responded. The fire was declared under control by 4:30 p.m. The Fire Marshal‰??s Office is investigating the cause, according to Fire Department spokesperson Kathy Matheson.

PUYALLUP, Wash. ‰?? The fire that started at a cold storage facility in Puyallup on Saturday was officially "under control" by Monday afternoon.
Though some smoke continues to rise from the debris, it is not too dangerous, according to fire officials.
A fence is up around the facility as investigators begin their work to determine what caused the fire. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting in the investigation.
What became a 3-alarm commercial fire started Saturday around 5:20 a.m. and prompted evacuations in the area due to concerns of toxic fumes. Residents were advised to shelter in place on Sunday.
Central Pierce Fire & Rescue said hundreds of firefighters responded to the fire at Washington Cold Storage Inc., located at 240 15th Street SE.
The Department of Ecology responded to the scene to help monitor air quality in the area.
Some sections of the blaze were left to burn over fears of chemicals stored at the facility.
The building contained 1,000 pounds of a refrigerant called anhydrous ammonia, according to Captain Darrin Shaw with Central Pierce Fire & Rescue. Anhydrous ammonia is lighter than air, so crews allowed the chemical to burn and rise into the atmosphere rather than weigh it down with water, which would then ‰??coat the community,‰?? Shaw said.

ELECTRIC CAR FIRE WEST OF REDMOND PROMPTS SPECIAL FIREFIGHTER PRECAUTIONS

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) ‰?? Vehicle fires are fairly frequent on the High Desert, especially during the summertime. But when electric vehicles catch fire, as did one west of Redmond Monday morning, special precautions have to happen for firefighter safety.

Redmond Fire & Rescue units were dispatched shortly before 9 a.m. to the reported electric car fire in the 8900 block of Cliff Swallow Drive in the Eagle Ridge neighborhood, near Eagle Crest Resort, Battalion Chief Ken Brown said.

The first engine crew to arrive reported that the Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicle was fully involved, with close exposures to a chalet condominium and two large juniper trees, Brown said.

‰??Crews made a quick initial knockdown, but called for reinforcements, as the severely damaged batteries posed a unique firefighting obstacle,‰?? Brown said in a news release.

Most car fires can be doused with a single fire engine‰??s water tank. But with this model, the battery that powers the motor and other elements of the car is made of high-energy density lithium-ion pouch cells that span the width of the car and are positioned as low as possible, between the axles front to rear, the battalion chief said.

HOUSTON (ICIS)--A fire at an offshore oil platform in Mexico killed five workers, state energy producer Pemex said on Monday.

The fire raises questions about whether the accident will interrupt production.

Reuters reported that the accident caused Pemex to cut crude production by 440,000 bbl/day, because the company lacked natural gas to re-inject into its oil fields. Reuters cited a company document.

Bloomberg also reported that oil production fell by more than 400,000 bbl/day as a result of the accident.

Pemex did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the reports.

In a statement, the company said the fire took place at the E-Ku-A2 platform in the Ku-Maloob-Zaap field in the Bay of Campeche. The accident killed a Pemex employee and four workers from Cotemar, a contractor.

Lebanese lawyers have sued a UK-registered chemical company at the High Court in London over its alleged role in the massive explosion last year at Beirut‰??s port that killed more than 200 people.

The lawsuit was filed against Savaro Ltd this month by the Beirut Bar Association and four others, including a survivor of the blast and the families of two people who were killed. It alleges that the chemical company failed to properly store or dispose of hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate that ignited on August 4 last year, causing one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.

Lawyers said the case was an attempt to hold to account those allegedly responsible for the explosion, which devastated huge areas of Beirut, killed at least 218 people, wounded thousands of others and caused about $4bn of damage to the Lebanese capital.

Families of the victims have increasingly pinned their hopes on international investigations to bring them justice, blaming Lebanon‰??s ruling elite for hampering a domestic probe.

This case is being brought in London because Savaro, listed as a chemical wholesaler, is registered in the UK. The lawyers are seeking damages from the company, although these will be quantified later.
