Demystify:
That is sad news. I was lucky to have had a few non-chemistry interactions with Eugene over the past few years. Outside of his many contributions to chemical safety, he was also a very good person. I live in the same town as him. Besides sharing his knowledge with local (and not so local) Hazmat teams, he made generous donations to my daughter's robotics team (encourage those kids to learn and build!). Also, during the pandemic, he built and gave away many bird feeders to local children. He took great joy in receiving pictures of them hanging in local yards and of kids enjoying the birds. He will be missed by many but those that were close to him should take solace in knowing that he shared many small pieces of himself with the world that will live on for a very long time. He left the world and those who interacted with him better than they were before.

This is so sad to hear. I never had the fortune to meet Eugene, but his messages on this listserv were always treasure troves of information. He had a wealth of knowledge and was always willing to take the time to share it, and his messages on the philosophical aspects of safety were always thoughtful and insightful. I’m glad that some of that wisdom will be preserved in the Eugene’s Corner websites, but they’ll be a pale shadow of the man himself. If there’s any sort of memorial fund or something like that, I’m sure there are members of DCHAS who would be interested in contributing.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Eugene Ngai Passed Away

Dear Sir,

As an old friend of Eugene Ngai and ACS Division member, I would like to post the following sad news of Eugene Ngai. Please help to post it or let me know how to post it. Thanks!

Jenq-Renn Chen

Professor, Department of Safety, Health and Environmental Engineering

National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan.

 ----

It is sad to inform the division members that Eugene Ngai, a long-time member of the division and recipient of 2011 ACS Howard Fawcett Award for his contributions to chemical safety, has passed away on July 3rd after a short battle with tumor uncovered in April.

Eugene just finished the establishment of “Eugene’s Corner” websites in April this year which contains more than 100 articles from his 50 years’ experiences in the development and safety of specialty compressed gases. “Eugene’s Corner” can be found in the following three websites:

1. Dr. Christina Baxter, Hazard 3, created a space on their website https://hazard3.com/

2. Semiconductor Environmental Health and Safety Association (SESHA) website https://sesha.org/

3. Lynne Kilpatrick, HMEx, https://hmexassistant.com/
