Hi Monica

Welcome to CHAS!

Short answer  - yes. If your student workers are in the teaching lab while the lab is in session, they should be attired as are the students.

If they're in the stockroom, doing stockroom duties that involve a risk of chemical exposure, they should have on eye protection and lab coat.

An anecdote: a seemingly simple task of removing a reagent bottle from its packaging to put an inventory sticker on it and put it in the cabinet turned into a full blown haz mat response when the bottom fell out of the bottle, landed on the other bottles in the package and broke them too. Prudently, the worker was wearing eye protection, a lab coat and proper lab attire so they had minimal exposure. And they had the presence of mind to promptly exit the lab and call for help.  Lots of help!

Best Regards
Debbie

Hello, everyone.

I'm relatively new to the division; this is my first post. We're discussing students with Work-Study Program (https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/work-study) assignments in the chemistry storage room here. These students help sort and hand out equipment and reagents for the various labs that are standard at the undergraduate level. They also go to the teaching labs to refill paper towels, distilled water, and soap, sometimes while a lab is taking place. Question: do these students have to wear a lab coat/goggles while working in the storage room? If anyone has official guidelines, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
