Dear Community:
We ask that you do not connect my request of promoting the ACS course with the accident at the University of New Mexico. It is very important that ACS does not speculate and
comment on causes of accidents as it could get ACS entangled in the investigations and potentially has very unfortunate legal ramifications. I should have emphasized it in my first message!
So yes, we are still asking to promote the course but please do not mention the New Mexico University story as the context why we share this info right now
😊
Also, a reminder any requests for ACS comments need to be sent to Emily Abbott , who is copied on this message as her office coordinates all contacts with press.
Thanks a million.
Marta

Importance: High

Dear Chemica Safety Community:
Our ACS Colleagues shared this news story with us:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/investigation-underway-into-chemical-storage-at-new-mexico-highlands-university-after-death/ar-AA1rhj06
The investigation is pending but “a strong chemical smell “ indicates a problem related to chemical safety.
Our community authored an excellent course that addresses issues related to storing, organizing and disposing chemicals and we do not see this course widely used.
https://institute.acs.org/foundations-for-storing-organizing-and-disposing.html
I would be very grateful to you all for promoting this resource. The course is free and includes a library of templates on how to request additional resources to deal with hazardous
waste.
We don’t know what happened, but we know that nobody should be exposed to “ a strong chemical smell” at the universities.
Thank you.
Marta
