We have been using Parr shaker hydrogenation in my labs for >30 years.
Very easy and reliable if you have the hydrogen / nitrogen and vacuum all hooked up and ready to go.
We keep our Parr hydrogenator in a standard fume hood -- isolated from the other fume hoods.
We have a 2L maximum bottle size. So reactions are limited to 600 – 800 mL total.
WE are currently evaluating in situ hydrogen generator (note – not pushing corporate products here) as a safer , reliable, on-demand source of hydrogen.

Kind Regards

Subject: Re: [DCHAS-L] Lab Hydrogenation
I only have experience with the balloon method but found this article. :)
Dear CHAS members
Wondered if anyone has some experience and specific guidance on lab hydrogenations specific to a Parr unit designed for lab scale hydrogenations:
- Scale limitations (pressure and volumes) for lab.
- Does it vary by floor?
- Special considerations – hydrogen monitor
- Limitations to cylinders
- Hood construction (hood sash considerations)
- Other??
Any procedures, SOP, slide decks….etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
