We use a water-mist system in our larger hoods (floor-mounted and scale-up)
.  The system was provided by Marioff, now part of United Technologies Corp
 (UTC) (  The advantages are that it minimizes damag
e to equipment (including electronics) in the hoods, minimizes smoke damage
, and extinguishes the fire very quickly.  It is more effective than regula
r sprinklers at extinguishing flammable and combustible liquid fires.  The 
chemists accept it because the total volume of water is small and there isn
't water raining down on their equipment and chemicals.

While on the topic of sprinkler systems, what is everyone's view on
sprinkler systems installed inside a fume hood?  This has been a topic that
our insurer has batted around with us for years.  They would like to
recommend sprinklers be installed inside fume hoods where larger volumes of
flammable solvents are used (such as floor-to-ceiling fume hoods in our
scale-up labs and waste accumulation rooms).

Any comments would be appreciated.

Either way, I'd check with your facilities folks to see which vendors are
used in other parts of the university.  You might get better service this
way and it's definitely easier to work with only one vendor.  If they don't
have someone they recommend, you want to make sure you find a vendor that
understand the safety needs of a laboratory.
