Water sprinklers are not that good for flammable liquid fires. AFFF foam or
CO2 is better for flammable liquids

While on the topic of sprinkler systems, what is everyone's view on
sprinkler systems installed inside a fume hood? This has been a topic that
our insurer has batted around with us for years. They would like to
recommend sprinklers be installed inside fume hoods where larger volumes of
flammable solvents are used (such as floor-to-ceiling fume hoods in our
scale-up labs and waste accumulation rooms).

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

We use these folks for our entire plant. I'm not sure if Knoxville is in
his territory, but I'm sure he would send you in the right direction.

I would also recommend these folks; again I'm not sure if Knoxville is in
her area, but I'm sure she'd make a referal.

Either way, I'd check with your facilities folks to see which vendors are
used in other parts of the university. You might get better service this
way and it's definitely easier to work with only one vendor. If they don't
have someone they recommend, you want to make sure you find a vendor that
understand the safety needs of a laboratory.

Contact a local sprinkler design and engineering or fire engineering
consultant in addition to your insurer.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is renovating three biology labs
